With an announcement that mixes generosity with stringent conditions, the United States has vowed $2 billion to support United Nations humanitarian programmes. However, this contribution came with a direct message for the global organization: it must "evolve or perish."
A Significant Pledge During Broader Budget Reductions
The pledge was made amid significant cuts in US funding for humanitarian operations. Additional reductions are also anticipated from other major contributors including the UK and Germany. The official, a senior Trump administration figure, delivered the announcement alongside the UN's emergency relief chief.
"This contribution will be crucial for saving millions of lives," stated the UN's relief coordinator. However, the $2 billion constitutes only a fraction of the United States' traditional contributions, which previously totaled around $17 billion in the recent past.
Aid Accompanied by Strings Attached
The latest US aid comes with without restrictions. It is earmarked for a select group of 17 nations, such as Haiti, Syria, and Sudan. Crucially, Afghanistan and Yemen are explicitly excluded.

Furthermore, the stipulations explicitly rule out funding for initiatives focused on global warming, which were described as not "essential for survival" and against "the US interest."

Issuing a blunt warning, the US official warned the UN that it must "change or face irrelevance." He stated that the US "coffers will not support agencies that seek to return to previous methods."
