A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
